June 2012 - PDGA Hall of Fame inductees announced.
In June, the PDGA announced it's 2012 inductees to it's Hall of Fame. Sarasota Sky Pilot and Sarasota Disc Golf pioneer Tim Willis was chosen along with Jeff Homburg and Bob Gentil to be commemorated. Tim was chosen due to his long term commitment to the sport, his work as a regional coordinator and for his many contributions to disc golf. Learn more at www.discgolfhalloffame.org. Thanks Tim for all of your fine works and for representing Sarasota so well! Pictures of the commemorative disc designs created for the inductees can be seen here.
June also brought the Sarasota Sky Pilots acknowledgement and thanks from All Faiths Food Bank for our ongoing support and donations. The acknowledgement letter and pictures of the All Faiths Food Bank Wall can be seen here.
April 2012 - Air Potato Round Up & Course Clean Up.
Our next big event is the 4th Annual Air Potato Round Up - Saturday, April 14 (9am-12pm) at North Water Tower Park. Please join us and the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program's Bay Guardian volunteers as we remove the invasive Air Potato Vine and seeds. This fast spreading and pesky plant climbs and destroys native vegetation and trees. There will be around 100 volunteers so thanks for joining the fun. Sky Pilot volunteers will be treated to lunch by the SSP Food Committee following the clean-up. Learn more at www.SarasotaBay.org
March 2012 - Birdie Fund Blowout & Tour del Sol.
Join us for a fun event - the Birdie Fund Blowout, taking place Saturday, March 3 at North Water Tower Park. The Birdie Fund Blowout is hosted when that particular fund caps twice. More details coming soon, check the "EVENTS" page. Also, be on the look out for dates when the handicap times change, following DST change the second Sunday of March.
In other news Sarasota's Lakeview Park will once again be the home for the 3rd annual Snake & Lake Partake benefiting the Racing Dog Rescue Project. The Snake & Lake Partake event has been awarded a stop on the 2012 Tour del Sol Florida Edition, a fun series hosted by Sun King Disc Sports! The event will commence Sunday, August 5 at Lakeview Park, as a PDGA sanctioned C-tier event open to all skill levels. Learn more at www.DelSolDiscGolf.com
February 2012 - Sarasota Ice Bowl benefiting All Faiths Food Bank.
Thank you everyone who attended and sponsored the 16th annual Sarasota Ice Bowl. We raised around $2,700 and several hundred pounds of food for All Faiths Food Bank. The event featured 102 competitors including 20 Co-ed Teams. Maybe the coolest feature was the age range of players, our youngest competitor (age 10) and our oldest competitor (age 75). Disc golf is truly a sport for all ages. And the Sarasota Ice Bowl remains one of our most fun events with the "Super Short" tee pads, Silent Auction, and a ton of Mulligans being purchased and used. Thanks to everyone who brought out non-perishable food items. Also, special thanks to Observer photographer Rachel O'Hara who shot some great photos during the morning round. Please follow the link to see the photo gallery.
Special thanks to Bryan Moore who served as the Sarasota Ice Bowl Tournament Director for the 6th consecutive year. Bryan Moore is a professional level golfer sponsored by Team Discraft and also serves as the PDGA State Coordinator of Florida, www.facebook.com/FloridaDiscSports.

January 2012 - Happy New Year!
Thank you to the 25+ volunteers that showed up in support of our big Course Improvement & Work Day at North Water Tower Park. We removed a ton of fallen debris and cleaned up the fairways on the course. Thanks for being a volunteer for one of our quarterly park clean up events in the City of Sarasota. You do not need to be a club member to help clean up the course and park so consider joining us next time. We do a lot of community work and partner with the local home owners association and nearby Crossroads Church.
We also collected a huge pile of Air Potato Vine seeds and removed vines in several places. We appreciate everyone's support removing the invasive Air Potato Vine plant and seeds. There will be an upcoming event targeting this pesky plant, the 4th Annual Air Potato Round Up, in partnership with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program's Bay Guardians volunteer program. There will be around 100 people at North Water Tower Park that morning, Saturday, April 14. Learn more at www.sarasotabay.org
December 2011 - Happy Holidays!
Things are pretty quiet in December. There is a big event in Gainesville, the Florida State Championships December 3-4, a non-sanctioned pro/am tournament at Northside Park. The Gainesville Chain Hawks club has a great event planned, and next spring they'll be installing all new baskets with alternate pin locations along with new tee signs. The following weekend is the big Tour del Sol FINALS at Taylor Park in Largo December 10-11. The culmination of the 2011 Tour del Sol is a PDGA sanctioned B-tier event with professionals and amateurs.
The Sky Pilots club wishes you and your family Happy Holidays!
November 2011 - Giving Thanks.
We'd like to thank everyone who helps make our club special. Our volunteer network really helps keep our parks clean, and our courses fun to play. There have been a lot of improvements at both North Water Tower Park and Lakeview Park. The most noticeable action has been taking place at Lakeview in large part thanks to our favorite couple over 70, Judy & Odell Gipson. They do a great job promoting our local events and the sport in general. Judy is also a great point of contact with the Sarasota County Parks & Recreation office. SC P&R has done a tremendous job working with our club to improve and maintain Lakeview Park and the disc golf course, including a brand new kiosk display board, three new recycle & garbage bins, five new oak trees, six new benches, and they fixed the pump which has the water system looking very healthy. The local club members have finalized the tee pad installations (18 Blue & Red pads), and have removed a bunch of invasive species along with adding more than 10 new pin locations. There are even select Gold pads going in on the course. Amazingly the park has volunteers doing work that we don't even know - thank you who ever you are!
We want to acknowledge everyone who attended our annual SSP Banquet & Awards Party. Once again we hosted a fun night at the Sarasota Farm Bureau, with the theme of Cowboys and Indians. A tasty meal was served, photo slide show, a ton of raffle prizes, entertaining 9-hole mini golf course, both kinds of music (Country & Western), and of course our annual recognition of award winners. Remember the awards honor just a few of the many club members who donate their time in support of the SSP mission, and to help our sport grow. Our MC for the evening was Franklin Freedom. The SSP board did a great job as always and we all owe them a big thank you!
2011 SSP Award Winners:
Most Improved Player - Craig Edwards
Sportsmanship Award - Dan Smith
Disc Golfer of the Year - Bryan Moore
Jim Widick Award for Outstanding Volunteer - Judy & Odell Gipson, Jodi McConnell
Sky Pilot of the Year - Franklin Freedom
Lifetime Achievement - Connie Lehman
Thank you Sky Pilots!
October 2011 - The Fright Feast is almost here.
Join us to see what the Sky Pilots come up with for the Epic Costume Course, featuring some old favorites and a few new concepts that will trick or treat players of all skill levels. As always the event takes place on the Saturday during Halloween weekend, Saturday, October 29. This year's home for the Fright Feast is Lakeview Park, now with dual tee pads on every hole (Blue & Red). Players will enjoy an afternoon round and then the GLOW round. The usual format is Teams of 3 (A / B / C) players on each team, randomly drawn.
Also in October is the 3rd annual Air Potato Round Up & Course Clean Up event, Saturday, October 15 at NWTP (9am-noon). Fall is the season to tackle the super invasive Air Potato Vine, gathering the potato seeds and pulling down and cutting the vines. This is an important way our club works with local city & county partners to improve our community park. We'll also be removing debris from the fairways, adding crushed shell around tee boxes and other course improvements. Please be there! As with most work days, we'll host a $5 outlaw doubles. As usual we're serving a free lunch to everyone who works a 3 hour volunteer shift.
September 2011 - Ace Race season!
Thanks for joining us at our annual Discraft Ace Race @ NWTP. We had 31 sold players packages, and 27 players that day. Six different people hit an ACE during the event, with our Grand Prize winner being Tom R (the only player with two aces!). 22 of 27 people hit metal during the event. We also awarded consolation prizes for top points earners. Bryan ran the show, which is somewhat fitting given that he is sponsored by Team Discraft. We also raised $70 for the SSP Basket Fund.
We have a big community event on Saturday, Sept 24. Join us for National Estuaries Day (NED) at Ken Thompson Park (9am-2pm). This is another chance to showcase the Sky Pilots club with a short 4-hole disc golf course for kids and adults of all ages to "try disc golf". We can use additional volunteers so please join us.
Up next is the Venice Ace Race, Saturday, October 1 @ Pinebrook Park. Sign up at 2pm. Franklin will once again be running the Venice Ace Race. Please show your support and join us!
Aug 2011 - Jim Widick remembered.
Thank you to everyone who made it out for the Jim Widick Girthday Golf celebration. We ran a normal handicap @ NWTP that morning, before a feast presented by the SSP Food Committee (special thanks to Jeff & Jodi McConnell). There was a brief tribute and pour for Jim at his memorial marker at hole #4. Then the ladies formed an order for captains choice, and began drafting players until everyone joined a team (minimum 6 players)... and away we went. The surprise of the day was the fact that every team actually completed all 18-holes. Thanks so much Jim Widick, the man who had the vision of disc golf growing in Sarasota.
July 2011 - Two events in July - we'll see you on the course!
Up next is the SSP Bar-b-que and Golf event on Sunday, July 3 at NWTP. There has been a tradition of having some kind of action on the 4th of July weekend... last year was the Fireworks in the Park event with all kinds of surprises and loud bangs! Our club's founding member, Jim Widick, always offered some wonderful and patriotic firecrackers and fun. Help us celebrate our nations birthday and have fun playing a little golf. July will also feature one of the Tour del Sol events right here in Sarasota. Join us on Sunday, July 17 at Lakeview Park for the Tour del Sol #10 - PDGA c-tier, part of a state-wide series. If you're not a current PDGA member, no problem, just add $10 waiver fee and you're good to go. Learn more about the Tour del Sol at www.DelSolDiscGolf.com
June 2011 - It's getting hot outside, again.
UPDATE: the Sky Pilot Shootout event has been postponed. The next fun event will be the SSP Bar-b-que and Golf event is on Sunday, July 3, taking place at NWTP. It's a lot of fun, for all ages and all skill levels. We'll most likely host a work-day / course clean-up at one of the parks during July. Be sure to look at the course kiosk at both parks. Also, if you have any pictures from the Sky Pilot Open and/or the Sarasota Amateur Championship please post on our facebook page your best images, or send to: email@example.com
May 2011 - Thank you for your support of our annual PDGA tournaments.
The Sky Pilots hosted the 15th annual PDGA tournaments in Sarasota. A huge thanks to everyone who made our back-to-back events so special. More than 150 competitors from all over the state of Florida competed this year... everyone had the opportunity to play two rounds on the temporary course at Bobby Jones Executive (fifth consecutive year), and two rounds at North Water Tower Park. Our club's ongoing park and course clean-up days really help make the course beautiful and challenging for all skill levels. The live scoreboard by Cal Lincoln was a really nice touch. SSP Food Committee Girls rock - we're lucky to have them. Incredible staff with Tom and Franklin - both just celebrated birthdays. Great job Tim Willis - we can't thank him enough.
Sarasota County Parks & Recreation has been a huge supporter and partner of the Sky Pilots. New for this year, we had the pleasure of working with the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau as an event sponsor. They also managed press releases for us, which lead to some great press coverage.

The weather is amazing... and our new league summer schedule will begin the first full week in April. Take advantage of our cool weather and play a round of disc golf with us. That quickly adds up and will easily cover your $25 membership one-time fee, or your $15 annual renewal fee.
February 2011 - Ice Bowl disc golf charity event

A big thanks to Franklin for a job well done. Also, thank you to Tim, Tom, Rhonda and SSP food committee for making this past weekends' Birdie Fund Blowout such a success. We had 40 golfers who signed up for our Saturday handicap... and plenty of folks helping out and hanging out. There were some new golfers, a few even asked about becoming a club member.
$500 was added to the party.... free food & added cash to payout for everyone! Added cash to a special birdie payout, in addition to the regular handicap.
There was a hole-in-one by a lifetime achievement member, ACE on #16 by Tyler. The bogey-free fund was hit by current Board member, Bryan. All the birdie fund money was paid out, all of it going to the kids... Johnathon, Cam and Travis.
August 2010 - NEW DISC GOLF COURSE OPENS IN VENICE!
On friday the 13th, Pinebrook Park Disc Golf Course had it's grand opening in Venice. Sarasota County, Venice City officials and Parks and Recreation staff were in attendance along with representatives of the Sarasota Sky Pilots Disc Golf Club. Club members in attendance included Jeff Watson (1983 Disc Golf World Champion), Tim Willis, Franklin Freedom, Steve Lake, Frank Martin, and Gary Nilsen. There was considerable interest exhibited for the course and for the sport by the attendees who were duly impressed by the SSP members each parking their discs for birdies at basket number one.
The course, designed and implemented by Greg Hosfeld for Sarasota County Parks and Recreation on land provided by the City of Venice, is a 9 hole short course that is really great for tightening up your approaches and putts. It is located on Pinebrook road near Lucaya avenue and is just north of Venice Avenue. Check the Sky Pilots
page for photos and the SSP website
page for a map and a link to the new
webpage which contains a course map and some course information. The webpage is still under development and more info is coming.
July 2010 - Recent Handicap News...

It must be Ace Race season!
Congrats to Bryan Moore who aced #6 with a Buzz for $500.
Congrats to Josh Raleigh who aced #4 with an Element for $279.
Congrats to JohnE McCray who aced #12 with a Gateway for $16.
Josh donated $25 and Bryan donated $75 to the SSP Basket Fund. Thanks guys!

Presentation of prize (and special acknowledgement) will take place at the end of the Snake & Lake Partake on August 28th. The Lakeview course needs to have it's very own Logo to distinguish it like the memorable watertower one to the right does for North Watertower Park. Get to work!
May 2010 - Please register in advance for our upcoming PDGA events. You may also register online at www.sunkingdiscs.com
Pros - May 22-23

Spectators are welcome at Bobby Jones and North Water Tower. New for 2010, spectators may rent a golf cart from the Bobby Jones club house. The Pro-leg will feature top players from throughout the state. Please direct all questions to event TD, Tim Willis. firstname.lastname@example.org
April 2010 - The inaugural Sky Pilot Fool Around was a good time. The super-bizarre-o reverse payout was the biggest fool of the day, which took place on Saturday, April 3rd. Ron Tyre, back at the helm, offered a challenging and at times, crazy layout that the participants played twice (singles). The best moment of the day came when we decided to donate the event's ace fund to the SSP Basket Fund, and additionally both folks that cashed in the Advanced division donated their winnings, for a total of $80.
The SSP Basket Fund will soon surpass $1,000. This milestone will most likely be achieved at the upcoming, second annual Lid Golf. New format for this year is one round of doubles, on the short course, following regular Sunday doubles. Lid Golf features the entire round of golf played with a full size Frisbee. Collectable Efest (Discraft Ultra-stars) will be available for sale.
March 2010 - March madness they say, well for a touring pro that may be true. Florida had two big tournaments back-to-back weekends, the Melbourne Open and the inaugural Sunshine State Shootout in Ocala, FL. Sun King Disc Sports was the host of the SSS, Mike Barnett was the tournament TD. This was the only chance for Florida players to qualify at home for the USDGC. Congrats to John McCray who did get one of the five spots.
SSP bag tags finally arrived. They were special delivered on a mule from Iceland. If you're a current member and have not yet received your bag tag please send an email to us: email@example.com
February 2010 - Mr. Smalls Mini Event is back. This time we played on the south side of town. Participants, more than 18 of us, played one round of 18-holes of mini putt-putt golf at Evies on Bee Ridge. Everyone then headed to Lakeview Park for one round of mini disc golf (9-holes twice). The mini disc golf course played over water, up and down hill, under trees and really felt like a full-size, big-disc golf course. Two players did shoot under par. The event concluded with the kick off to another Mini element, mini Kan Jam. Dave Rambo created a perfectly scaled down version of Kan Jam with similar rules. It was most definitely a fun time. Join us at the next Mr. Smalls Mini Event, we'll be headed North this time around with a mini putt-putt round at Smugglers Cove and mini disc golf at North Water Tower. The South edition of Mr. Smalls Mini Event raised $147 for the SSP Basket Fund.
January 2010 - Our lovely Florida winters are perfect for outside activities, even this year which would appear to be one of the coldest winters of recent memory. The Sarasota Ice Bowl is a long-standing tradition. One again we raised money and food for our friends at All Faiths Food Bank. After surpassing more than 11K in total donations in our 14 years of hosting the Ice Bowl, we're excited about the continued success and expanding with new community fundraiser events.
Official Ice Bowl totals We're proud to announce the Sarasota Sky Pilots' 14th annual Super Ice Bowl benefiting All Faiths Food Bank raised $1,705 and 455 pounds of food. It's amazing what we can achieve in just a few hours at a one-day disc golf event. Thank you to the many sponsors, staff and volunteers that made this year's Ice Bowl successful. A very special thanks to Jersey Mikes Subs who provided a free sub card for each participant ($600 value) and the presenting sponsor Badda Bing Bars who has extended a 15% discount to our members at their 3 locations, just ask for the Sky Pilot discount.
December 2009 - Family time is near and dear during the holiday season. Our club did host a big work day at North Water Tower in early December with more than 15 volunteers. On behalf of all the Sarasota Sky Pilots, happy holidays!
November 2009 - Banquet season is often the end of October or early November. The Sky Pilots once again hosted the annual Banquet and Awards Party at the VFW. Thank you to everyone that made the SSP Banquet and Awards Party a fun occasion. The Sky Pilots were out in full force on this perfect November evening. The photo slide show was fantastic thanks to Steve Lake and Frank Martin. Following the awards ceremony and photos was a large group outside for 9-holes of mini disc golf, a blast for sure. We counted exactly 1,718 smiles in just one night. Please send your photos or stories to info@SarasotaSkyPilots.org.

October 2009 - Fright Feast grew to an all new level this year. The “Spooky Costume Course”, a brain-child of Bmoore was totally unique. Each hole had a theme and pretty much every hole offered a trick-or-treat. Some of the baskets were very difficult to putt towards, making that sweet birdie even better. We used the typical Fright Feast format of teams of 3 (A/B/C). Afternoon round ran smoothly. We then feasted on buffalo wings and all the fixings. Then we re-drew teams as there were separate payouts for each round, mostly to accommodate anyone with trick-or-treaters. The night round was very dark and quite scary. Some of the notable hole themes included: Madussa, Kan't Jam, All Tied Up, Crime Scene, BamBoo, Moss Toss, Hobo Mansion, The Wall, Murder She Mote.
Also, each October thousands of young people travel to Sarasota for the UPA National Championships of Ultimate. It's become a fantastic way to see familiar Sky Pilot faces. The event spans 4 days the last weekend of October, taking place at the Sarasota Polo Grounds. Check out some of the action next year, it's free for spectators and they also serve free beer in the beer garden (with proper ID).
September 2009 - Ace Race was the main event in September. Ace Race is a totally fun event, where your $25 entry fee gets you a sweet players package and two custom discs, each person gets one throw per hole, no putting, just ace runs. The only ace on the day was hit by Ralph in the first round. This was the first time the Sky Pilots hosted an Ace Race. We faced a little bit of a rainy day, and yet 20 strong willed players took on the challenge. The weather held off long enough for the Kan Jam tournament to begin after the conclusion of Ace Race.
The Kan Jam tourney was round-robin style to establish seeding. The highlight was Ian Tomkinson & Bryan Moore, after going 0-9 in qualifying, caught fire and won every match landing them in the finals against Mike Barnett & Tyler Brant. The youth toppled the experienced gentlemen and took home the championship, in the rain, on Ian's birthday.
We hosted a second Ace Race at the end of September at Lakeview Park. We've already secured our date for the next Ace Race in 2010. Please join us on September 11, 2010 at North Water Tower Park. More information will be available closer to the event.
August 2009 - The Sky Pilots continue to host a growing number of special events. The month of August saw the inaugural Snake & Lake Partake benefiting a local non-profit, the Racing Dog Rescue Project (RDRP). We raised $150 at the event, and a lovely Sky Pilot made an anonymous contribution of $100 pushing our total donation to $250. We hope to double the amount at next year's event which will be a PDGA sanctioned c-tier tournament.
We also witnessed the continuation and celebration of Girthday Golf, honoring our founding member Jim Widick. The massive event was on the Sunday following the SNLP. More than 70 folks joined us to celebrate and remember the Kid. There were wonderful photo collages on display, the Sky Pilots covered the cost of all the meat, food, meat, beverages, and more meat. There were also vintage photos taped to the number plate on each basket, so when the giant group began the slow-herd moving round of group-team golf we hand a great reminder of how lucky we all really are. We'll always remember you Jim. The event also featured a touching ash ceremony with Jim's family.
Here's a link to a great disc golf article at www.espn.com , courtesy of Bryan Moore.
Jim Widick SSP #1 Memorial Page
Jim will live on in our hearts forever. His passing reminds us all how precious life truly is. Please give your best wishes and support to his family.
